The second week we’re seeing each other, Peyton’s parents bring Molly to Wednesday night t-ball practice. Her dad makes sure to pull me aside and threaten me. After I assure him I intend to marry his daughter, he calms down before letting me know he’s still watching me.

A couple nights later, Peyton reluctantly invites me to dinner at her parents’ house. She bites her bottom lip and runs her hands up and down her thighs the entire ride over. “Hey. It’s going to be okay.” I grab her hand and kiss her soft knuckles.

“I want everyone to get along.” She looks so nervous.

“No matter what, I’ll make sure everything works out. I’m not giving you up,” I reassure her as we pull into her parents’ driveway.

Roger Hayes greets us at the door. “Come on in. Your mom is about to set the table.” He hugs Peyton then turns to me. “Let’s go to the living room and talk.” As I follow behind him, I see Peyton worriedly watching me.

After handing me a drink, Roger smirks. “If you survive this dinner, you can survive our family.” His ominous words shake me. “I’d drink that whiskey fast so you can drink at least one more before dinner. You’re going to need all the alcohol you can get in your system to survive my wife’s cooking.” My stomach drops at the evil look on his face. “We’ve gotten used to it, but it hits newcomers hard.” Following his warning, I down my drink and wait while he refills our glasses.

Later that night, it takes three rounds of antacids to undo the damage Peyton’s mother’s lasagna causes to my stomach. “Honey, when we have kids, your parents are coming over to our house for dinner. Your mom isn’t cooking for the kids.”

Peyton just laughs and rubs my poor, abused stomach as I lay back on the sofa suffering. “I’m sorry you had to go through that. I really thought my dad would grill something. It’s what they usually do for company.” Yeah, your dad wanted to test me. I think to myself.
